OpenAI launches ChatGPT for teens, promising a more age-appropriate chatbot

OpenAI has introduced a new version of ChatGPT specifically designed for teenagers aged 13 to 17. This is the first generation of users to grow up with artificial intelligence. The company aims to provide a more age-appropriate chatbot experience, with stronger protections in place to prevent exposure to harmful content like suicide, self-harm, and romantic or sexual conversations.

ChatGPT for Teens will offer homework and study support to help students learn, rather than simply providing answers and essays. The chatbot is also programmed to avoid anthropomorphizing and engaging in unhealthy relationships with users, and it does not imply personal feelings or consciousness.

OpenAI's vice president of global policy, Ann O’Leary, emphasized the importance of treating teens as such, ensuring the chatbot is presented at the right developmental stage, neither talking down to them nor treating them like children. Risks associated with widespread teen usage of AI chatbots have been highlighted by parents, educators, and child development experts, who have expressed concerns about cheating on schoolwork and even suicidal ideation.

A 2025 study from Common Sense Media found that over 70% of teens use AI chatbots for companionship, with half using them regularly. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the prevalence of emotional overreliance on the technology among young people. The new teen version of ChatGPT includes features to limit interactions that could lead to unhealthy relationships and relationships with the AI, such as romantic or sexual chats.
