OpenAI launches ChatGPT for teens amid youth safety concerns

OpenAI plans to launch a version of ChatGPT specifically tailored for teenagers from August 19, responding to global safety concerns surrounding youth usage of the AI platform. The new ChatGPT for Teens will automatically implement stricter content filters for users under 18, limiting exposure to harmful or inappropriate material such as self-harm, violence, eating disorders, explicit sexual content, and dangerous activities. OpenAI asserts that these enhanced protections aim to foster healthier real-world relationships.

Upon registration, users will be required to disclose their age, and OpenAI's age prediction system will further estimate the account holder's age through usage patterns and other indicators. ChatGPT for Teens will also feature warnings discouraging teens from uploading private or sensitive photos and introduce learning and safety features during registration.

Parents will have the ability to link their accounts to their teen's account, receiving alerts in high-risk situations, such as potential signs of eating disorders. ChatGPT for Teens will prevent romantic or sexualized roleplay, emotional dependence, and the impression that the AI has feelings or consciousness. Moreover, parents can block teens from viewing graphic content and viral challenges, and set time limits for ChatGPT usage.

To link parent and teen accounts, teens must accept their parent's invitation on their own account. The platform also offers customized learning experiences, such as Study Mode, which provides guiding questions and step-by-step support to help teenagers comprehend material. Additionally, homework reminders will redirect users back to Study Mode when it detects attempts to receive direct answers to questions.
