OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT for Teens, a specific version of its chatbot designed for users under 18 years old. The company announced the launch of the new version, which uses age estimation systems to identify minors and provide a tailored experience as the default for users under 18. The specialized version, set to roll out today with a gradual global extension over the coming weeks, includes educational features and parental controls.

OpenAI will base the age determination on users' self-declared ages upon registration and also employs an in-house AI model to estimate age based on behavioral signals and platform usage patterns. Users can appeal the estimation and undergo verification processes to modify classifications if necessary.

OpenAI's Lauren Jonas, Global Youth and Family Leader, expressed confidence in their age estimation system, noting that it analyzes signals accumulated over days or weeks to make accurate identifications. The new version of ChatGPT for Teens incorporates learning-oriented tools, usage limits, enhanced parental controls, and restrictions on model-generated content to avoid sensitive themes like violence or sexual material.

Teenagers will receive regular reminders to take breaks and be made aware that they are interacting with AI, not a human. OpenAI has reinforced protections to prevent ChatGPT from suggesting personal feelings toward users or implying consciousness and emotionality. Parental controls allow the activation or deactivation of features like ChatGPT memory or voice mode, as well as the setting of usage schedules, enabling parents to restrict when their teenagers can use the platform.

Notifications alert parents to potentially risky situations, such as mental health concerns or policy violations concerning violence, with human review before sending notifications within an hour of detected interactions. The ChatGPT for Teens version offers academic suggestions for study guides, flashcards, and interactive quizzes, with a specific quiz function that directs students away from immediate answers and toward step-by-step guidance to enhance their understanding.
