NSEMA raises alarm over Kangimi Dam cracks, demands urgent action

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has expressed concern over structural cracks at Kangimi Dam in Kaduna State. If not addressed, these cracks could lead to flooding, affecting communities in Kaduna, Niger State, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and surrounding regions during the heavy rainy season. NSEMA Director-General, Commander Abdullahi Baba Arah, has called for an immediate technical assessment of the dam and preventive measures.

He warned that a major structural failure could cause a sudden release of water, endangering roads, bridges, farmlands, and other critical infrastructure downstream.

NSEMA has urged the Federal Government, Kaduna State Government, dam authorities, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Nigeria Hydrological Agency (NiMet), and security agencies to urgently assess the severity of the cracks and determine the level of risk. Specific actions requested include identifying vulnerable communities and infrastructure, activating an early-warning system, defining evacuation routes, safe locations, and emergency assembly points, and enhancing coordination among the respective states.

Residents in potentially affected areas are advised to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary activities near waterways during heavy rainfall, and report any unusual water movement or sudden flooding to emergency authorities. NSEMA emphasizes that treating the reported cracks as an urgent safety concern and taking preventive action is crucial to avoid avoidable deaths, displacement, destruction of infrastructure, and economic losses.
