NorthStandard joins the SSI as a member with a focus on the SSI’s Human Risk & Resilience platform

The Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI) has announced that global marine insurer NorthStandard has joined the organization as a member. NorthStandard has chosen to focus its involvement on the SSI's Human Risk & Resilience platform, bringing its perspective as a leading member of the International Group of P&I Clubs. This move solidifies the SSI's commitment to ensuring seafarers have safe, secure, and rewarding careers, aligning with the organization's long-held ambition.

Yves Vandenborn, Head of Loss Prevention Asia Pacific at NorthStandard, expressed delight at the opportunity to contribute to the SSI's Human Risk & Resilience workstream. The organization's mutual insurance model emphasizes the critical role of people in global trade, and Vandenborn believes that by collaborating with industry partners and the wider maritime community, they can drive positive outcomes.

Ellie Besley-Gould, Chief Executive of the Sustainable Shipping Initiative, emphasized the importance of insurers in understanding and mitigating the risks faced by seafarers. She highlighted NorthStandard's expertise in risk assessment, which will bolster the SSI's evidence base in the Human Risk & Resilience work. The SSI's membership expansion, now including NorthStandard's 15 years of experience in convening stakeholders across the maritime industry, further strengthens the collective effort to transform ambition into concrete action.
