Vea requested a trade after the sides failed to reach an understanding. Entering the final year of his current deal, Vea's contract would pay him roughly $18 million in 2026. However, his recent performance metrics, including 101 quarterback pressures and 11.5 sacks over the past two seasons, put him on par with other highly paid interior defensive linemen.

For Tampa Bay, retaining Vea would significantly strengthen their defense, which has already undergone substantial changes.
