NANS urges Tinubu to release withheld Osun LG funds

The National Association of Nigerian Students, Southwest Zone D, has called upon President Bola Tinubu to release statutory funds held back for the 30 local government areas of Osun State. This plea came in an open letter signed by the association's coordinator, Adeyemo Josiah, following the August 15, 2026, gubernatorial election in the state.

The letter highlighted that Tinubu had congratulated Osun's newly re-elected governor, Ademola Adeleke, on his victory, but urged him to focus on governance and development rather than political differences. According to the group, over ₦200 billion in withheld funds had accumulated by mid-2026, with more expected each month. They argued that local governments, closest to students and their communities, depend heavily on these funds for essential services like roads, sanitation, healthcare, water supply, and security.

The association emphasized that this issue is not merely political or administrative, as it directly impacts students' daily lives. NANS Southwest urged Tinubu to clear any legal or administrative barriers and ensure the funds reach the local governments through a lawful, transparent, and accountable process. They also emphasized that the release of the funds should not be seen as a political victory but as a move towards constitutional governance and grassroots development.
