My iPhone keyboard was becoming infuriating for typing AI prompts— I changed these 3 settings, and ChatGPT is now much easier to use

For a while now, my iPhone keyboard had been driving me crazy when typing AI prompts. The messages I sent to ChatGPT would often be filled with typos, making it hard to communicate effectively. The culprit turned out to be Predictive Text, a feature that Apple supposedly helps with, but ended up causing more problems. To improve my typing experience, I decided to experiment with various settings.

Turning off Predictive Text made a world of difference. Upon heading into Settings > General > Keyboard > Predictive Text, I noticed the improvements immediately. The keyboard felt calmer, and the bizarre words that usually appeared in my ChatGPT prompts were no longer a problem.

Interestingly, Predictive Text and Auto-Correction are two separate features. While Predictive Text predicts the next word or phrase based on the ones we've already typed, Auto-Correction corrects spelling errors. With Predictive Text disabled, I could still enjoy Auto-Correction's helpful spelling corrections without the noise of constant suggestions.

Another useful tip is resetting the Keyboard Dictionary. Over time, our keyboards learn from our typos, names, and accidentally accepted corrections, which can lead to poor suggestions. To reset it, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary. This wipes the custom words learned by the keyboard, returning it to its default state.

I also discovered Text Replacement, a handy feature for frequently used phrases. By creating shortcuts for common expressions, such as ";short" for "Keep your answer concise and don't repeat my question,” I found it much easier to communicate with AI.

Finally, I found the spacebar cursor feature extremely useful. By holding down the spacebar, the keyboard turns into a trackpad, allowing for precise cursor adjustment, especially when long prompts are involved. Disabling Predictive Text has been a game-changer for me, and I encourage others to give it a try.
