Meta faces trial over teen addiction, child data claims

Meta is embarking on a legal battle to defend the design of its Facebook and Instagram platforms, which are accused of being engineered to keep young users engaged for extended periods and potentially causing harm. If the outcome favors the 29 states filing the lawsuit, it could set a precedent for how courts perceive social media's role in the lives of children and teenagers.

The trial, taking place in federal court in Oakland, California, will scrutinize key features such as infinite scrolling, recommendation systems, autoplay, like counts, appearance-altering filters, and disappearing posts, all of which Meta is being sued over. The states, led by attorneys general from California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey, claim Meta violated consumer protection laws and the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act by gathering data from children under 13 and misleading the public about safety measures.

They also allege the company knowingly employed design elements that pushed users to spend more time on the platforms. Meta firmly disagrees with these allegations, asserting its commitment to protecting young users. The financial stakes are substantial, with Meta potentially facing penalties of up to $1.4 trillion if the case goes against it, although the states estimate the damages to be closer to $193 billion.

While social media companies typically enjoy strong legal protections under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, the states argue Meta's liability arises from its own design decisions, citing internal research on social comparison and the negative impacts of features like visible like counts. The trial, expected to last about five weeks, will feature testimony from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Instagram head Adam Mosseri, and experts in technology and psychology.
