Manitoba property owner charged with shooting at accused thieves

A 66-year-old homeowner in rural Manitoba was charged after he fired shots at a group of people he believed were thieves, police reported. The incident occurred on Saturday in the Rural Municipality of Dufferin, about 95 kilometers southwest of Winnipeg. Four people had gone to the property to steal items and returned later in two stolen vehicles.

The homeowner, who was 95 kilometers southwest of Winnipeg, saw the suspects on a motion-activated camera and confronted them, firing shots towards the stolen vehicles. Three suspects were arrested and charged with theft, trespassing, and mischief. The fourth suspect fled in the other stolen vehicle, and is still at large. The homeowner was also charged with careless use of a firearm and discharging a firearm recklessly.

He was released on an undertaking. Premier Wab Kinew expressed support for the homeowner's actions, stating that individuals should not be judge, jury, and executioner.
