Malmesbury teen faces 11 charges in global ‘764’ child exploitation investigation

A 16-year-old from Malmesbury is set to face 11 charges, including various sexual offences and cruelty to animals, in a global "764" child exploitation investigation. The teenager was apprehended on Monday after a joint operation by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and United States law enforcement agencies. His case has been adjourned until Thursday, 20 August 2026, for a district surgeon's assessment.

The charges include seven counts of sexual assault, sexual exploitation of children, distribution and possession of child sexual abuse material, cruelty to animals, and threats of violence or property damage via data messages. The arrest sheds light on the global reach of violent online networks targeting children and vulnerable individuals.

SAPS' National Serial and Electronic Crime Investigations (SECI) Team received intelligence from the FBI, the US Embassy, and the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) leading to the teenager's arrest in Malmesbury. Police found child sexual abuse material and imagery related to animal cruelty during the search.

Several child victims have been identified, and the investigation also probes possible fraud and money-laundering offenses. The FBI has warned of the growing threat from "764" and similar networks that systematically target minors and vulnerable individuals, employing manipulation, threats, and blackmail to exploit victims. The charges remain allegations, and the teenager is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
