Kimberley’s ‘Benjie Baby’ makes history with ‘MasterChef South Africa’ season 6 win

Benjie Benjamin, a home cook from Kimberley, Northern Cape, has made history by winning MasterChef South Africa season 6. The 40-year-old, nicknamed "Benjie Baby" by judges and fellow contestants, is the first contestant from the region to clinch the coveted title and R1 million prize. Coming from a mining town, Benjie stood out among self-taught contestants who competed fiercely for the ultimate cooking prize.

Benjie's journey in the competition began with 20 home cooks, but he quickly established himself as a serious contender. He earned his first "Dish of the Day" by the second episode and secured seven challenge victories before the finale. One of his standout creations was his playful take on two-minute noodles, which he transformed into "Crêpes Suzette Benjette."

In the final challenge, Benjie and his competitor, Candice Meth of Durban, faced a 120-minute deadline to create a three-course meal inspired by their journeys in the competition. Despite the pressure, Benjie delivered a perfectly cooked salmon, a balanced pork belly dish, and a sophisticated dessert that earned him the victory. The judges praised his dishes, with Chef Katlego Mlambo calling his Crêpes Suzette Benjette her favorite Benjie dish of the season.

Benjie's win represents more than a television title for him. Having initially doubted his abilities, he hopes his success will inspire other cooks from the Northern Cape to express themselves in the kitchen. With his R1 million prize, Benjie plans to do some home renovations and spoil his supportive family. MasterChef South Africa season 6 premiered on 16 August and will be rebroadcast on various e.tv channels.
