Kia EV5 edges out Tesla Model Y in German electric SUV test

Kia's EV5 has emerged victorious in a German comparison test against Tesla's Model Y, emerging atop after surpassing its American counterpart in four out of seven categories. The EV5 claimed the top spot in a recent electric SUV evaluation by German automotive publication Auto Motor und Sport, outperforming the Model Y, XPeng G6 and MG S6 EV, according to Kia.

The four vehicles underwent scrutiny in seven key areas, including body, safety, convenience, powertrain, driving performance, environmental performance and economy. The EV5 scored a total of 588 points out of 1,000, while the Model Y obtained 557, the XPeng G6 garnered 541 and the MG S6 EV registered 528.

The EV5's superiority was particularly evident in the first five categories, where it scored a total of 404 points, outpacing the Model Y by 67 points, as reported by Kia. The Korean SUV demonstrated its strengths in body, safety, convenience and driving performance, with significant differences in areas such as interior space, braking and road handling.

In the body category, the EV5 scored an impressive 100 points, compared to the Model Y's 76, receiving praise from the magazine for its elevated seating position, spacious cabin and cargo area. The gap in safety scores was also notable.
