Kalonzo: What happened in Homa Bay is an impeachable offence

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has denounced the violence that erupted during the Linda Mwananchi campaign in Homa Bay, cautioning President William Ruto that he risks forfeiting his legitimacy if he fails to ensure the safety of Kenyans. Addressing a public gathering on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, Kalonzo characterized the Homa Bay incident as an "impeachable offence," asserting that the president bears a constitutional duty to safeguard citizens.

"What has transpired in Homa Bay is clearly intolerable. In fact, it constitutes an impeachable offence," Kalonzo declared. He held Ruto accountable for the security conditions, emphasizing that the right to life is a fundamental entitlement that every government is obligated to protect. "If you, as a leader in the country, one vested with the instruments of power, cannot guarantee the basic right to life, then you have no business occupying that high office and posing as the country's leader," Kalonzo remarked.

The former vice president also cautioned that political unrest could erode investor confidence and dissuade young people from seeking employment opportunities. "Yeyote yule duniani kote anataka kuweka rasilimali yake ndio asaidie vijana wetu, angalau wapate nafasi za kazi, hawezi kuleta pesa zake kwa nchi ambayo kabla uchaguzi kufanyika, inakukalika militias in the name of goons," he warned.

Kalonzo further accused the rise of organized groups of instilling fear and uncertainty in the lead-up to the 2027 General Election. "Sahi, spreading fear and despondency, we will not permit. Kenyans, we will not allow," he vowed. However, he called for political tolerance while urging Ruto to reconsider his actions. "But we must exercise tolerance.

Bwana William Ruto, I strongly advise you to cease, the damage to our country," Kalonzo stated. These demands followed tumultuous scenes witnessed in Homa Bay as the Linda Mwananchi team traversed the county. The movement accused security agencies of failing to shield its leaders and supporters, alleging that its convoy faced roadblocks and adversaries along multiple routes.

In a statement released on Monday, August 17, 2026, Linda Mwananchi contended that police officers at times appeared to collaborate with groups assaulting the convoy and alleged that armed individuals were stationed along its path. "Most alarming was the presence of armed individuals positioned in bushes along our route who fired directly at the Linda Mwananchi convoy. This was not mere crowd chaos. It was an ambush!" the movement asserted.
