July car sales hit 30-month production high as Malaysia’s auto sector climbs 5pc

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 — Malaysia's automotive sector saw a five percent year-on-year increase in total industry volume (TIV) to 73,615 units in July 2026, according to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA). This growth was driven by a 30-month high in monthly production volume and a surge in pick-up sales. Passenger vehicle sales boosted by seven percent year-on-year, reaching 68,900 units in July 2026, up from 64,438 units in the same period last year.

However, commercial vehicle sales declined by 16 percent year-on-year, falling to 4,715 units from 5,619 units previously. Production figures also rose five percent year-on-year to 75,490 units, with passenger vehicle output expanding to 71,713 units and commercial vehicle output dropping to 3,777 units. For August 2026, the MAA anticipates sales to continue on this upward trajectory, buoyed by targeted promotional efforts.
