Jem raises $8.4m to expand AI-powered platform
The workforce management platform serves 250 000+ frontline workers across 200+ companies and plans to expand its AI-native offering.
South African HR technology firm Jem has secured $8.4 million in Series A funding to grow its AI-powered workforce management platform for frontline workers. The investment, led by Quona Capital, will enable the Cape Town-based company to develop additional products and features such as time and attendance, onboarding, employee assistance programmes and credit scoring.
Currently serving over 250,000 employees across 200 companies, Jem's platform operates through WhatsApp and has seen revenue growth of more than 120% in the past year. The funding round also included participation from University Tech Fund, E4E and angel investors, including former Old Mutual CEO Iain Williamson. Jem's CEO, Simon Ellis, emphasises the company's mission to replace a patchwork of legacy systems with a unified platform built on WhatsApp for deskless workforces.
The next phase of growth will focus on an AI-native workforce management platform, with Jem planning to roll out "Jem 2.0" featuring new products already live and others in beta. CEO Ellis and COO Caroline van der Merwe share that the company aims to serve over a million users within three years and eventually expand internationally.
Partners Quona Venture Partner Johan Bosini notes the opportunity to leverage Jem's WhatsApp-based platform to offer employers a broader range of workforce services, potentially including payroll integration, mobile connectivity, insurance and other employee benefits.
