Invincible trotter Varenne, Italy's most famous horse, dies at 31

The famous Italian trotter Varenne, widely regarded as the country's most celebrated horse, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 31 following a heart attack. Known as "the Captain," Varenne enjoyed a successful five-year racing career from 1998 to 2002, during which he achieved a remarkable 62 victories in 73 races, including 53 Grand Prix events. His winnings exceeded €6 million in prize money, making him a symbol of elegance and athletic prowess in the world of trotting.

Varenne's accomplishments transcended the sport, as he became a celebrity on popular TV shows and was inducted into the United States Harness Racing Hall of Fame in 2010. His loyal driver, Giampaolo Minnucci, described Varenne as a "Ferrari with a brain." In 2002, Varenne captivated audiences during a presentation at Milan's San Siro stadium when he bowed to the crowd by lowering his head and touching his muzzle with his right front leg.

The horse's impressive lineage dates back to his birth near Ferrara, Italy, on May 19, 1995. Named after the Rue de Varenne in Paris, where Italy's embassy is located, Varenne was acquired by his long-standing owner, Enzo Giordano, after his debut race in 1998. Throughout his career, Varenne set world records at the mile distance in 2001 and the 1,000-meter track in 2002.

He toured the globe, setting records and receiving honors from Pope Wojtyla and Italy's President Ciampi. Varenne's legacy continues as his semen was sold worldwide from 2004 to 2024, producing over 2,000 offspring for more than €20,000 per cover.
