Indonesia rolls out new QRIS credit option with CIMB Niaga on board

Jakarta, Aug 18 — Indonesia's Bank Indonesia (BI) has introduced a new credit card payment option through its Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) system, with CIMB Niaga joining eight other payment service providers in the Bank Indonesia's (BI) Indonesian Credit Card (KKI) initiative. The bank, Indonesia's sixth-largest by assets and majority-owned by Malaysia-based CIMB Group, is among the eight providers offering the KKI, which can be used for both conventional and sharia-compliant transactions.

BI Governor Destry Damayanti stated that the initiative, launched in line with Indonesia's 81st Independence Day, aims to drive economic growth while providing tangible benefits to the public. BI noted that as of June, QRIS had 65.77 million users and 44.86 million merchants, with 96.68 percent of these merchants being micro, small, and medium enterprises. In the first half of 2026 alone, 12.55 billion transactions totaling 1.12 quadrillion rupiah were recorded.

BI Payment System Policy Department head Ryan Rizaldy added that the KKI will be expanded to include online payments and offline transactions using physical cards, further enhancing the payment system's capabilities. The KKI, initially issued for government spending, has now been extended to individuals and corporations for various services.
