IKEA Prepares UK Resale Marketplace Launch

IKEA is set to introduce an online resale marketplace in the United Kingdom, enabling consumers to purchase and trade pre-owned furniture and home decor items, according to PA Media on August 18. IKEA Family members will have the opportunity to interact within the platform, as reported. "The launch of our second-hand marketplace in the U.K. represents a significant step towards building a destination that streamlines access to pre-owned IKEA furniture," stated an IKEA spokesperson.

"We aim to create a reliable and dynamic platform that enables our IKEA Family members to trade directly with one another," added the spokesperson. IKEA has not disclosed a specific launch date but did not provide details about the platform in the coming months. IKEA UK has not yet commented on the matter. Ingka Group, an IKEA retailer operating in 31 markets, disclosed in an August 2024 press release that it had initiated testing of a secondhand marketplace named Ikea Preowned in Madrid and Oslo.

Jesper Brodin, CEO of Ingka Group at the time, noted in the press release that the global secondhand furniture market is experiencing rapid growth, with a projected annual growth rate of 6.4% in 2024. Currently, IKEA products account for 10% of the secondhand home furnishing market. IKEA's platform aims to simplify and enhance the experience for both sellers and buyers.

Customers can input the item they wish to sell, along with photos and the price, while IKEA's AI-powered database generates promotional images and measurements. The buyer can then collect the furniture directly from the seller, who has the option to receive payment or an IKEA voucher with a 15% bonus. Malin Cleverdal, an opportunity leader at Ingka Group, reported in July 2025 that the company had secondhand marketplaces in three markets and intended to expand the initiative further.

"We are receiving consistently positive feedback," Cleverdal stated in an interview featured on the Ingka Group website. "User scores are stable at 4.4 out of 5. We are transitioning from a pilot to a fully operational business, confident that we are addressing consumers' needs."
