I tried ChatGPT's new interactive quizzes on 5 subjects I thought I knew well — it quickly found the gaps in my knowledge

ChatGPT has launched a new interactive quiz feature that allows users to engage in a more active test of their own knowledge. This feature is part of OpenAI's growing set of learning tools, including Study Mode and other functionalities. To try it out, I selected five subjects, including AI history, astronomy, 1990s pop culture, Shakespeare, and world geography, where I thought I was well-versed. Surprisingly, the AI quickly identified gaps in my understanding.

Using the quiz feature is straightforward; you simply need to prompt ChatGPT to generate a quiz. In my case, I requested a college-level quiz on AI history with multiple-choice questions, without seeing answers until I provided mine. This one-question-at-a-time format proved to be a game-changer. While I initially found the questions increasingly challenging, I still managed to perform reasonably well and learn new facts.

As the difficulty increased, I had to request harder questions on topics like orbital mechanics and astronomical measurements. I also had the option to modify the difficulty level dynamically, which is something a static quiz cannot offer. Further, I could adjust the quiz to include more challenging questions beyond simple title recall, which helped me achieve a perfect score in the 1990s pop culture category.

Shakespeare proved to be another area where ChatGPT could provide a more nuanced test. By avoiding well-known quotes and focusing on secondary characters and plot details, I was able to gain a better understanding of the playwright's work. Finally, for world geography, I adjusted my prompt to increase difficulty after three consecutive correct answers, which kept me humble and challenged me to recall obscure geographical facts.

It is essential to note that ChatGPT is not infallible and may occasionally produce incorrect or misleading answers. Therefore, verifying the accuracy of the responses is crucial. Despite this limitation, the interactive quiz feature demonstrates the potential for AI to aid in the learning process, providing tailored questions and explanations based on the user's knowledge level.
