Highly anticipated battle headlines Friday’s Game of the Week

Friday night football is back, and the Mahoning Valley is set to witness an electrifying showdown between two contrasting football teams in one of the most highly anticipated games of the year. The Boardman Spartans, a program that has recently tasted playoff success after consecutive playoff seasons, will take on the Youngstown Defenders, a brand-new consolidated public high school powerhouse making its debut at the varsity level.

The Spartans, known for their battle-tested approach, boast a powerful offense and defense, with 7 letter winners and 5 starters returning from last season. They have implemented their Wing-T offense with great success, securing a playoff win in 2025 over Riverside. Youngstown, on the other hand, comprises two public schools, East and Chaney, who combined for a 10-9 record last season. Both schools averaged over 22 points per game, and their defensive units held opponents to 17 points or fewer per contest.

Coach Seth Antram of the Youngstown Defenders emphasized the unique bond among the players, stating that they grew up together, attended classes at Choffin, and have been around each other outside of athletics for their entire lives. This camaraderie and unity have clearly made an impact on their performance on the field. The Defenders' offense averaged 23.2 points per game, while their defense held the opposing teams to 16.2 points.

Last season, in a thrilling matchup on September 5, the Boardman Spartans bested the Chaney team in triple overtime, securing a 35-34 victory. Both teams have shown immense potential, with Boardman having not had a 7-win campaign since 2011, while Youngstown, comprising East and Chaney, scored over 22 points per game last season.
