Govt to seek modifications to SC order on Imran’s health: law minister

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar announced on Tuesday that the government plans to petition the Supreme Court for "suitable modifications" to its directive directing former Prime Minister Imran Khan's transfer to Shifa International Hospital for a medical examination. This move follows the court's order, issued earlier in the day, mandating the transfer of the incarcerated PTI founder within two days to Shifa for medical evaluation.

Law Minister Tarar stated that the government intends to request that Imran Khan be treated at a government hospital instead of a private facility, while allowing medical experts and professionals to continue their involvement in his care. Tarar explained that permitting prisoners to undergo medical examinations at private hospitals could set a precedent, potentially leading to similar requests from "thousands" of other inmates across the country suffering from various health issues.

According to the minister, treatment for many medical conditions is feasible within prisons, while government hospitals possess the requisite facilities for prisoners necessitating treatment beyond jail walls. The Law Minister further emphasized that the Supreme Court is being asked to make "suitable modifications" to align the order with the constitutional parameters and legal framework.

Earlier, the apex court had directed the government to permit Imran Khan's physician, Dr. Faisal Sultan, and his sister, Dr. Uzma Khan, to accompany him during the medical examination, bearing the associated expenses themselves. Additionally, the court ordered Imran Khan's transfer to the hospital under stringent security measures and the establishment of a specialized medical board to oversee his treatment.

As per the Supreme Court's directives, Imran Khan will remain at the hospital until the next hearing to ensure a comprehensive medical examination and treatment.
