GoldBod ‘Losses’: We’re not ignorant, we know our job – Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader and Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin has dismissed allegations that the Minority lacks the capability to evaluate the financial performance and operations of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod). At a press conference held in Parliament on Tuesday, August 18, Mr Afenyo-Markin stated that the opposition would persist in examining GoldBod's handling of public resources and demand accountability from the organization. He emphasized that the opposition is not "ignorant" and fully aware of their responsibilities.

The dispute between the Minority and GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi erupted over claims regarding the institution's financial performance. Gyamfi vehemently rejected the allegations of loss, calling them "blatant lies" and attributing them to what he perceived as Mr Afenyo-Markin's "hallucinatory imagination". He confidently declared that GoldBod's audited 2025 financial statements reveal an operational surplus of GH¢907 million and an overall surplus of GH¢5.4 billion.

In response, Mr Afenyo-Markin reiterated that the Minority bears the obligation to scrutinize GoldBod's operations and question the management of Ghana's gold resources, irrespective of the figures presented by the institution. He stressed that the opposition's aim is not to engage in personal attacks or insults against GoldBod officials, but to ensure that public institutions remain accountable to the citizens of Ghana.

"We are here to hold their feet to the fire and make them accountable and not trade insults," he concluded.
