Ghana court remands man over plot to rob three banks

A man named Okechukwu Augustine has been remanded by a Ghanaian court in connection with a plot to rob three banks in Accra's Labone area. Augustine was arrested on Thursday after the Ghana Police Service thwarted the planned attack on the GCB Bank, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank branches. The police received a tip-off about the gang's intentions around 10:45 am on August 13, 2026, and immediately dispatched a team to the area.

Upon arrival, the police spotted the suspects in two vehicles parked near the banks. One of the vehicles fled when the police officers spotted them, leading to a high-speed chase and a shootout that resulted in the death of two suspects. Augustine, along with two others, was apprehended. The police recovered two vehicles - a Toyota Highlander and a Hyundai Tucson - along with a blow pistol.

Despite the police's claim, GCB Bank denied that any robbery or attempted robbery had occurred at its Labone branch. The court case is set to resume on Wednesday as authorities continue their investigation into the alleged plot.
