Tübingen-based BioTech startup Computomics has secured €6.3 million in Series B funding to enhance its climate-smart breeding platform and assist crop breeders in adapting to rising heat and drought conditions. Convent Capital Agri Food Fund led the investment round, with participation from existing investors HTGF, MBG Baden-Württemberg, Amathaon Capital, and the founders and scientific advisors.

The EU's InvestEU Fund also supported the company. Stephen McLoughlin, Partner at Convent Capital Agri Food Fund, stated that the firm supports businesses where environmental impact grows with commercial success. The series funding arrives as European growers face challenges from heat and drought, with the European Commission forecasting lower yields for spring and summer crops.

Computomics, spun off from the Max Planck Institute and the University of Tübingen, uses machine learning models to predict the performance of specific genotypes under various environmental conditions. The company's ×SeedScore® platform runs these predictions at the scale of a full commercial breeding program, offering breeders insights into which candidates will perform well in hotter, drier conditions and where varieties should be placed.

The new funding will enable Computomics to scale its climate-smart breeding platform and extend the technology to more breeding programs at a faster pace.
