Former Mayor Michael Nutter, wife Lisa Nutter help lead return of Philadelphia Cycling Classic

With 12 days before the Philadelphia Cycling Classic, former Mayor Michael Nutter and his wife Lisa Nutter are enthusiastic about the return of a race they consider integral to Philadelphia's cycling culture. The couple recently discussed their role in bringing the event back and their personal connection to the sport, which extends beyond advocacy to competition.

Lisa Nutter, known for her support of cycling, is also a competitive athlete who participates in indoor track cycling races. She has achieved four-time national champion status in her category. Michael Nutter, her husband, remains her most enthusiastic supporter, frequently recording her races and providing vocal encouragement during her competitions.

The couple is currently focused on reviving the Philadelphia Cycling Classic, a race that once traversed Philadelphia's streets but ceased in 2016 due to a lack of corporate sponsorship. The idea to revive the race originated when Philadelphia resident and former professional cyclist Carlos Rodgers approached Lisa Nutter with the proposal after a 10-year absence.

Michael Nutter emphasized the international nature of the event, which features teams from ten countries. The race spans a 14.4-mile course, with male competitors completing eight laps and female competitors completing four laps. Despite the shorter distance, Lisa Nutter noted that the race is fast-paced and challenging. She also noted that the race's prize money was previously unequal between male and female competitors, but this discrepancy was rectified during her husband's tenure as mayor.

Lisa Nutter began cycling after recovering from knee injuries sustained while running, and she believes the sport offers long-term benefits. She and her husband are serving as co-chairs of the Philadelphia Cycling Classic, scheduled for August 30. The race is expected to draw thousands of spectators and begins and ends on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

Michael Nutter emphasized that the race reflects the city's identity and allows spectators to get close to the athletes as they ride the course. For him and his wife, this return of the race is a natural extension of their years of public service to the city, embodying the spirit of Philadelphia, its "brotherly love and sisterly affection."
