FG woos corps members for CNG vehicle conversion

The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) has implored corps members undergoing training in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicle conversion to capitalize on the burgeoning opportunities in Nigeria’s clean mobility sector. Joseph Osanipin, the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of NADDC, made this appeal during the technical launch of the NADDC and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) CNG Retrofitting Training Programme at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Lagos.

The programme, which has drawn numerous youth corps members, aims to equip participants with practical skills in converting petrol-powered vehicles to CNG.

The programme’s primary goal is to produce not just certificate holders, but competent automotive technicians and entrepreneurs who can actively contribute to Nigeria’s emerging CNG ecosystem. Trainees will be taught about CNG components, installation procedures, fuel-system integration, electrical and electronic connections, leak detection, testing, calibration, diagnostics, and maintenance. However, emphasis will be placed on safety, with participants required to acquire competence before engaging in conversion jobs.

Joseph Osanipin emphasized that the NADDC's objective extends beyond awarding certificates. He stressed that the programme will produce automotive technicians and entrepreneurs who can confidently contribute to the growing CNG sector in Nigeria. He urged the corps members to pay close attention to their instructors, participate actively in practical sessions, and understand the reasons behind each installation procedure.

He also warned of the potential consequences of poor workmanship, improper connections, inadequate testing, and neglect of safety measures.

Dr. Titilope Gbadamosi, a Senior Special Assistant to the President on Youth Initiatives, encouraged the corps members to seize the Federal Government’s CNG conversion initiative. She explained that this programme would generate significant employment opportunities for young Nigerians. Furthermore, the NADDC DG has pledged to certify corps members, free of charge, who wish to establish their own CNG conversion workshops, thereby lowering entry barriers for young entrepreneurs.

Gbadamosi also shared that the Federal Government aims to convert 100,000 vehicles annually, which necessitates a large pool of skilled young people capable of meeting the increasing demand for CNG conversion services. Upon completion of the orientation programme, young engineers will be attached to accredited conversion centers for a full year of practical training. She urged the corps members to take this opportunity seriously, noting that their newly acquired skills could lead to entrepreneurship and wealth creation.
