Edo Assembly sets up committee to probe ex-Speaker, orders return of vehicles, others

The Edo State House of Assembly has formed a six-person committee to investigate allegations against the former Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku. According to the Daily Post, Agbebaku resigned as Speaker on August 17, 2026. The new Speaker, Yekini Idaiye, revealed that Agbebaku was dismissed due to financial misconduct and inadequate leadership.

Idaiye further accused Agbebaku of inflating the prices of luxury vehicles such as Lexus 570 and Toyota Hilux bought for assembly members. The committee, chaired by Iyamu Bright from Orhionmwon II, will be led by members including Donald Okogbe from Akoko-Edo II, Uzamere Andrew from Ovia North-East II, Ugabi Kingsley from Etsako East, and Maria Edeko from Esan North-East II.

Idaiye granted the committee two weeks to present its findings to the House. Additionally, the Speaker announced the disbandment of all existing committees within the House. Moreover, the assembly has instructed the former Speaker, former Majority Leader Jonathan Ibhamawu, Deputy Majority Leader Addeh Emankhu Isibor, and the former Speaker's Chief of Staff to return all official vehicles and other government assets they are currently holding to the Clerk of the House.

Idaiye urged these individuals to promptly return all government property, particularly the vehicles, to the Clerk's office following the recent leadership change.
