Direct Alicante–Gibraltar Flights Move Closer After Historic EU Deal

Direct flights between Alicante and Gibraltar could become a reality following a landmark post-Brexit agreement with the European Union. Currently, there is no non-stop service between Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport and Gibraltar, forcing passengers to either travel by road or book connecting flights via the UK. Gibraltar's new relationship with the EU has removed a significant legal obstacle, allowing the territory to become an external entry point for the Schengen travel area.

This opens up the possibility for EU airlines to serve Gibraltar, potentially including Spanish carriers interested in launching new routes. While no airline has announced a direct service to Alicante, the Gibraltar Government is actively seeking additional connections and is expected to discuss potential partnerships with airlines.

A direct route to Alicante could be highly attractive due to the province's large British and international population, with Alicante Airport handling passengers traveling to numerous resorts and residential communities along the Costa Blanca. The route would cover approximately 485 kilometers with a likely flying time of just over one hour.

Gibraltar's popularity among British tourists, who can benefit from familiar laws, currency, and British stores, as well as its attractions such as military history and nature reserves, makes it an appealing destination. Direct flights could appeal to wedding parties, weekend visitors, shoppers, and those visiting friends and relatives.

Business traffic might also support the route, given Gibraltar's diverse industries. Seasonal services during the summer could be considered initially. The 90-day rule has been adjusted to allow British tourists time spent in Gibraltar to count towards their Schengen allowance, although this does not provide an additional separate allowance.

While direct Alicante–Gibraltar flights are still a possibility rather than a confirmed route, the removal of legal barriers and the government's efforts to attract airlines suggest the prospect is becoming increasingly realistic.
