Defence Stocks Rise Up To 8% As Govt Notifies 405-Item Indigenisation List Worth ₹3,070 Crore

On August 18, defence stocks experienced a significant surge following the Department of Defence Production's notification of the sixth Positive Indigenisation List (PIL). This list, containing 405 strategically important defence items, is estimated to generate business opportunities worth approximately Rs 3,070 crore for domestic manufacturers.

Among the various categories of products, Line Replaceable Units, sub-systems, sub-assemblies, spare parts, components, and raw materials are included. Notably, 16 items are designated for the Indian Coast Guard, while the remaining 389 items pertain to the country's Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs). The notified items encompass a wide range of major defence platforms and systems, including Advanced Light Helicopters, Light Utility Helicopters, Su-30MKI aircraft, Light Combat Aircraft, and AL-31FP engines.

Furthermore, components for armoured vehicles like T-72, T-90, and BMP-II platforms, as well as equipment for warships and missile systems, are also part of the list. Additionally, components associated with Konkurs-M, Invar, and MRSAM missile systems, along with Defence electronics such as radars, sonars, fire-control systems, and satellite communication equipment, are included.

High Explosive Anti-Tank ammunition and other critical defence products are also part of the list. Companies like Paras Defence and Zen Technologies led the gains, with their shares rising by 8% and 6.6%, respectively. Other stocks that also saw an increase include Axiscades, GRSE, and Data Patterns, which gained around 4%, 3.3%, and 3.2%, respectively.

The government aims to implement this indigenisation programme through the 'Make' procedure and internal development by DPSUs and the Coast Guard, with a greater involvement of Indian companies, particularly MSMEs and startups. This move is part of the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat strategy to establish a self-reliant defence manufacturing ecosystem, which is expected to boost investment, innovation, and import substitution.
