Deadly standoff on Western Cape farm: Gunman killed, police officer injured

On a farm in De Hoop, Robertson, Western Cape, a tense standoff between police and a gunman ended with the gunman's death, damage to police vehicles, and an injured officer. The confrontation began on Sunday evening after police received a complaint of a man shooting at a neighbor's vehicle. Police responded to the initial complaint, but the gunman began firing and called for backup.

Robertson police were targeted by the gunman and requested additional support. The tactical response team (TRT) was deployed to resolve the standoff, but they too were fired at, resulting in one police official suffering a shoulder injury and being hospitalized.

A heavy gun battle ensued as the Special Task Force (STF) was also called in on Monday afternoon. Two women in a neighboring house were rescued by STF members who entered the home tactfully. The gunman was shot and killed on the spot. An investigation is underway, and officials from the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) have been summoned to assist. Police recovered an assault rifle, a shotgun, two pistols, magazines, ammunition, flags, and notebooks.

The Acting National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, praised the swift and courageous actions of SAPS members during the prolonged armed standoff. She commended the first responders, the TRT, and especially the Special Task Force for their professional handling of the dangerous situation.

Dimpane emphasized that the safety of police officers is a top priority and stressed that tactical interventions must protect both officers and civilians. She wished the injured officer a speedy recovery and reiterated the SAPS' commitment to ensuring public safety. She vowed that criminals who target police officers and innocent people will face the full force of the SAPS.
