'Caterpillar from hell' moth found in Sweden – but biologist says no need to panic

A moth responsible for the infamous "caterpillar from hell" moniker has been observed in Skåne, southern Sweden. This particular caterpillar species has sparked concern in Denmark recently due to the health hazards it presents to humans. The insects can cause allergic reactions, leading to rashes and serious breathing problems. The recent outbreak in Denmark has even led to several schools being temporarily closed down for pest control measures.

This sighting of the moth in Skåne isn't entirely unexpected, as the region has experienced similar incidents in the past. The moth gets its name from its tendency to move in tight single-file lines once it has completely defoliated an oak tree and is looking for a new one. The caterpillars form communal nests within the oak trees, and they shed their skin multiple times before pupating into moths.

The shed skins, along with the toxic hairs, remain in the nests and can be carried by the wind, posing a risk to anyone standing beneath a tree with a nest.

Didrik Vanhoenacker, a biologist at the Swedish Museum of Natural History, clarified that isolated sightings of the moth in Skåne have occurred before. However, a single moth does not indicate that the species has established a permanent presence in the area. Vanhoenacker urged people to remain vigilant, given the moth's proximity to the Danish island of Amager, where the species has already established a foothold.

Despite the caterpillar's alarming nickname, Vanhoenacker emphasized that the hairs are merely irritating, not life-threatening. He advised people to stay calm, avoid unnecessary alarm, and remember that there are indeed places in the world where genuine suffering exists.
