Boehly and Walter consider selling Chelsea stake to Clearlake Capital

Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly and director Mark Walter are contemplating the sale of their shares in the English Premier League club to its majority owner, Clearlake Capital, according to recent reports. Boehly and Walter, both American billionaires, were among the investors who joined Clearlake in the £2.5 billion ($3.3 billion) acquisition of Chelsea from former owner Roman Abramovich in May 2022.

Clearlake now possesses a 62% stake in the club, while Boehly, Walter, and co-investor Hansjorg Wyss collectively hold the remaining shares, with Boehly and Walter managing 38% through their entity, Blueco Holdings. Reports suggest that Boehly has expressed dissatisfaction with Chelsea's recent direction, particularly concerning player acquisitions, managerial decisions, and stadium development plans.

There have been multiple attempts over the past two years for Boehly and Clearlake to exchange ownership interests. Both Boehly and Walter believe that Chelsea's value could reach £5 billion if they were to sell their stake. The duo share a friendship and business partnership, having co-invested in the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team and the LA Sparks women's basketball franchise.

Chelsea concluded the previous season in 10th place in the Premier League and welcomed Xabi Alonso as their new manager ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, which begins with a match against Fulham on August 24.
