Benge and Ewing nail the Padres at home plate as the Mets hang on for a 2-1 victory

Ewing proved crucial as they executed three consecutive outs at home plate. Rookie Benge's throw out of a runner in the first inning was quickly followed by rookie Ewing's cut down of another runner moments later.

Nolan McLean, the Mets' rookie right-hander, had a rocky start but managed to outlast the Padres' offense, giving up six hits and walking four over the first two innings. Fernando Tatis Jr. put on a show with a sacrifice fly in the second, tying the game at 2-2. However, Ewing sealed the deal with a throw out of Xander Bogaerts, who had connected on a single by Jake Cronenworth.

Jonathan Pintaro and Nate Lavender continued to bolster the Mets' strong defensive display in the later innings, closing out the game with a clean 3-0 final. The Mets' victory marked their 10th win in their last 13 games since the trade deadline, keeping them in contention for the final two National League playoff spots. Despite the Padres' recent hot streak of 17 wins since July 24, the Mets managed to outplay them thanks to their first-rate outfield defense and the timely contributions from their starting pitchers.
