Bail hearing for Mkhwanazi and five others resumes in Brakpan

The bail hearing for suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi and five others will recommence at the Brakpan Magistrate's Court on Tuesday morning. The six accused first sought bail on Friday, but the matter was adjourned for more arguments prior to a final decision on their bail request. The charges against Mkhwanazi and his co-defendants are linked to the April 2022 abduction and murder of businessman Emmanuel Mbense.

Mbense allegedly met his demise after being tortured in Brakpan, following which his body was disposed of in a dam. Juan Eksteen, a former police official, was added to the case on Friday, bringing the total number of accused to seven. They face multiple charges, including murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and attempting to thwart the judicial process.
