Arbeloa tips Bassey for Fulham captaincy

Fulham head coach Álvaro Arbeloa has singled out Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey as a potential leader for the club ahead of the upcoming Premier League season, according to PUNCH Sports Extra. Arbeloa's faith in the 26-year-old was evident when Bassey took on the captain's armband during the team's final two pre-season matches against Málaga and Stuttgart.

The coach emphasized Bassey's defensive versatility and work ethic, which align with his desired playing style. Arbeloa praised Bassey's personality, suggesting that his character could see him assume greater responsibilities within the squad. "To defend so high with a lot of space in behind, he has everything, and I think he's a top player," Arbeloa stated after the match against Stuttgart.

The Nigerian international has been a consistent presence at Craven Cottage since joining Fulham from Ajax in 2023, making 30 Premier League appearances last season and starting 28 of them. His exceptional performance earned him the Player of the Season award for the 2024/25 season, after he started 35 league matches. Arbeloa, who recently joined the club, has been working with Bassey and the rest of the squad during pre-season, and Bassey is now being considered for inclusion alongside Sander Berge, Antonee Robinson, and goalkeeper Bernd Leno in the experienced core that Arbeloa plans to lead the younger Fulham squad.
