Former Malaysian minister Xavier Jayakumar, now a member of the newly-formed Parti Bangsa Malaysia, has come under scrutiny from the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission (SPRM) following the arrest of his close friend, M A Thinagaran, for alleged corruption related to a project funded by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in 2019.

Xavier, a former MP for Kuala Langat from 1990-1995, has questioned the status of the SPRM investigation into his friend, requesting clarification on whether he is accused, implicated, or acquitted of any wrongdoing. He raised concerns over the lack of transparency, as the investigation has yet to provide clear information on the case's status, whether it has been closed or is still ongoing after several years.

Xavier, who previously joined the People's Justice Party (PKR) five years ago, now supports the Prime Minister's administration led by Muhyiddin Yassin, having served as a member of parliament for the Petaling Jaya constituency from 1990 to 1995. In 2022, he joined the Parti Bangsa Malaysia but has not disclosed the reasons behind his transfer from PKR or his subsequent affiliation with the new party. When leaving PKR, Xavier was already under investigation by SPRM following his friend's arrest.

In a statement, Xavier acknowledged that the SPRM investigation into his friend continues under the current administration of Anwar Ibrahim, though he emphasized that the government's responsibility remains to ensure transparency and accountability in the conduct of the investigation. He urged Xavier to clarify the circumstances surrounding his decision to leave PKR, referencing a previous accusation by a former PKR leader that political pressure contributed to his decision to leave the party.

Xavier insists that this issue represents a more significant concern than merely being a former political figure.
