Her manager, Jacky Leggo, confirmed her death on Monday 27th July, stating that she passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family. Law was born in Glasgow in 1932 and studied acting at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, originally intending to become a stage designer.

She married fellow actor Eric Thompson in 1957, and together they remained until his death in 1982. Throughout her long and diverse career, spanning eight decades, Law appeared in numerous TV shows and films, including her collaborations with her daughters, Dame Emma and Sophie Thompson. She played Mrs Bates in the 1996 adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma alongside Gwyneth Paltrow and Sophie Thompson.
