When Opposition Turns Into Obstruction, Democracy Pays The Price

The recent monsoon session of Parliament saw a significant decline in political discourse. The so-called "Hug Diplomacy" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi sparked a national debate, with senior Congress leaders boycotting Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort. However, the underlying issue is tied to the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, who appears to be pursuing a single-minded agenda of opposing everything the government does.

This misguided approach is detrimental to the democratic process, as it prevents the Opposition from functioning as a constructive force, as it should. Instead of working towards gaining public trust and then seeking a mandate, Rahul Gandhi and his party resort to shouting, raising slogans, and creating chaos in the House. This behavior not only prevents meaningful debate on proposed laws but also undermines the very institution of Parliament.

Rahul Gandhi's insistence on the resignation of the education minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, only serves to prolong the logjam in Parliament. A proper democracy is governed by established rules, not by the whims and fancies of a single leader. It is disheartening that Rahul Gandhi may not be the right person to lead the Opposition, perhaps due to his inability to engage in constructive debate.

His tactics of creating chaos and avoiding responsibility do not align with the true purpose of an Opposition party – to hold the government accountable. The Congress party, under Rahul Gandhi, seems increasingly unable or unwilling to recognize this crucial difference between making Parliament ungovernable and ensuring government accountability.
