We take a food and drink Odyssey through the Square Mile

As the final week of voting for the Toast the City Awards approaches, our wine columnist, Libby Brodie, embarked on a wine journey through London's most renowned bars and restaurants. This odyssey has surpassed all expectations, even surpassing Christopher Nolan's record-breaking film. I decided to take a similar odyssey through the Square Mile, visiting the finalists in our Toast the City Awards.

Our first stop was The Culpeper, a historic pub and restaurant located on Commercial Street. Climb to the rooftop garden for a respite from the glass and steel surroundings. The garden features birch and hazel trees, casting dappled shadows on the tables. Wild strawberries and mint scented pots add to the natural ambiance. The wine list offers unique and refreshing options, such as golden skin contact wines from Georgia, flavorful Pet Nats from Greece, and chilled reds.

Next, we walked 20 minutes to the 11th-century crypt of St Mary-Le-Bow Church, now known as Humble Grape Bow Lane. Inside the crypt, the atmosphere is cozy and romantic, with arched depths of candlelit stone. The wine bar boasts an impressive selection of over 500 organic wines from independent producers. While most of the wines are French and South African, they also offer intriguing options from Bulgaria, Serbia, and North Macedonia.

Our final destination was the Royal Exchange, a short walk from Humble Grape. This opulent venue offers a lively atmosphere with live music and cabaret performances throughout the week. The menu features a range of classic and modern cocktails paired with comfort food and caviar. The plush red velvet seating provides a regal setting for enjoying your drinks and indulging in the culinary delights.
