University Of Mumbai Seeks NIEPA Impact Assessment Of NEP 2020 Implementation, Highlights Academic Reforms And Expansion

Mumbai University seeks National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA) assessment of NEP 2020 implementation, emphasizing academic reforms and expansion. Vice-Chancellor Ravindra Kulkarni highlights significant progress compared to other universities in the state. The appeal aims to evaluate the policy's implementation, assessing its impact on students, faculty, and institutions, and identifying gaps for further intervention.

Under NEP 2020, Mumbai University has introduced reforms like multidisciplinary education, major-minor combinations, open electives, multiple entry and exit options, internships, on-the-job training, community engagement, and flexible academic programs. Autonomous colleges affiliated with the university have surged from 62 to 135. The university has also launched four-year honours, honours-with-research, two-year postgraduate, and five-year integrated programmes across its affiliated institutions.

Mumbai University has expanded multidisciplinary learning opportunities with 516 open elective courses across various streams. It has introduced skill-based courses, industry-supported laboratories, and promoted internships and apprenticeship-oriented programs to enhance students' employability. The university has also engaged in community initiatives, encouraging participation in field visits, surveys, NGO projects, awareness campaigns, social entrepreneurship, and research activities.

104 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with NGOs have been signed for these community engagement initiatives. Additionally, the university has expanded apprenticeship-embedded degree programs, with 17 launched in 2025-26 and two more in 2026-27. The university's progress presentation, titled "NEP 2020 Vision to Action and Best Practices for Holistic Implementation at University of Mumbai: 2023-26," was presented on August 17, 2026.
