UK mission praises Osun voters, urges lessons from election

The British High Commission lauded the residents of Osun State for their peaceful conduct during the August 15 governorship election, commending Governor Ademola Adeleke on his successful re-election. The commission sent accredited observers to observe the election, having discussed with various stakeholders prior to the vote. Their findings, in line with other independent observers, highlighted several positive signs of a healthy democratic process.

These included the timely opening of polling stations, the security forces' commitment to maintaining order, and the INEC officials' efficient execution of electoral procedures.

The British High Commission particularly applauded the voters for their "patience, resilience and participation" throughout the election. However, they pointed out isolated incidents of tension before and during the election, as well as the ongoing issue of voter interference, such as vote-buying. Furthermore, they raised concerns about accessibility for voters with disabilities and the elderly, as well as overcrowding due to limited supply and speed of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System devices for registration.

The High Commission urged relevant institutions to examine these challenges and learn from the election to improve future electoral processes. They encouraged institutions to review these issues carefully and draw lessons, including from recommendations by credible organizations such as the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, to enhance public confidence, transparency, and accountability.

Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, the commission noted that off-cycle elections had additional personnel and resources that may be harder to replicate during nationwide polls. Nevertheless, they expressed optimism that the Osun election experience could contribute to further improvements in Nigeria's electoral system.
