Uganda: Kabale Police Probe Suspected Suicide of Senior Five Student

Police in Uganda's Kabale District are probing the suspected suicide of a 20-year-old Senior Five student, Babra Katusiime. Katusiime, who lived in Ahamurangara Village, Bugarama Parish, Buhara Sub-county, was found dead on Thursday, August 13, 2026, around 6pm according to police. On the day of her death, Katusiime reportedly told her mother she would not attend school as she had no examinations to sit.

Her mother left for the garden and returned home around 6pm to find Katusiime hanging by a rope in their sitting room. Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death. Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime appealed to individuals experiencing stress, depression, financial issues or family problems to seek help instead of suffering alone.

He urged those in distress to confide in a trusted family member, friend, religious leader or local authority, or seek counseling at the nearest healthcare facility. Tumushime also cautioned against taking or sharing photographs or videos from the scene on social media, stating that such actions can further distress the bereaved family and disrespect the deceased. The loss has left Katusiime's family, Kigata High School, and the residents of Buhara in mourning.
