Trump orders Pentagon to cut back military exercises with South Korea, citing costs and lack of help with Iran

President Donald Trump directed the Pentagon to significantly reduce joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea, set to commence on August 17 and run until August 27, 2021. The exercises, known as Ulchi Freedom Shield, involve approximately 18,000 South Korean military personnel and are expected to include countermeasures for drones, GPS signal disruption, and cyberattacks, in response to evolving North Korean military capabilities.

Trump's decision was motivated by the high cost of the drills and the South Korean government's refusal to engage in actions against Iran. The President expressed dissatisfaction with the US's participation in these exercises, citing their perceived hostility towards South Korea, which he has described as "unthreatening and respectful" throughout his tenure.

Despite the recent missile launch by North Korea towards the Sea of Japan, Trump's comments emphasized the need to improve relations with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. He mentioned South Korea's refusal to join efforts to denuclearize Iran, and warned of potential military consequences if Iran pursued nuclear weapons. The reduction of these exercises may signal a shift in US military strategy, as North Korea's growing use of unmanned systems, electronic warfare, and cyber operations during the Russian invasion of Ukraine has potentially upgraded their military capabilities.
