Toronto Public Health investigating legionnaires’ disease outbreak near downtown core

Toronto Public Health is looking into a fresh outbreak of legionnaires' disease, according to reports. The outbreak involves six confirmed cases spread across a one-kilometre area around the intersection of Bathurst and Dupont streets. The affected individuals resided, worked, or visited the vicinity and fell ill between July 2 and July 26. Authorities are examining whether this new outbreak could be linked to a previous one, which saw five cases at Castleview Wychwood Towers, a long-term care facility in the region.

Legionnaires' disease is triggered by legionella bacteria present in water sources like cooling towers, hot tubs, sprinkler systems, humidifiers, and decorative fountains. People can catch the disease by inhaling tiny water droplets containing the bacteria. Public health officials emphasize that legionnaires' disease does not transmit from person to person, and the risk to the public is considered low.

They are currently conducting on-site inspections, environmental sampling, and implementing precautionary measures to control the situation. However, the source of infection has not been confirmed.
