Titans' Cam Ward Needs to Step It Up in Next Preseason Game

Cam Ward possesses considerable potential, yet his first preseason game for the Tennessee Titans did not quite live up to expectations. The young quarterback's development is one of the most significant storylines for the team in 2026. If Tennessee wishes to advance, Ward is the one who needs to step up. His rookie season was inconsistent, but there were indications of improvement as the year progressed.

However, those improvements didn't materialize during Thursday's game against the San Francisco 49ers. The situation was not ideal for Ward, as the 49ers rested their starters while new Titans head coach Robert Saleh provided his first-team offense with several series. Consequently, Ward had the opportunity to build upon his late-season performance but failed to establish a consistent rhythm.

He completed only five of 12 passes for 57 yards, resulting in a 56.6 passer rating, which fell short of Tennessee's expectations, particularly with improved wide receiver options like Wan Dale Robinson and rookie fourth overall pick Carnell Tate. While a few preseason games are insufficient to determine Ward's future, his ability to demonstrate greater consistency and growth will be crucial.

The Titans must provide him with time to develop, but the next preseason game presents an opportunity for Ward to regain confidence and reaffirm why Tennessee selected him as their top pick in 2025.
