Tarapith Hotel Fire Tragedy: 8 Killed, Several Injured; Owner Arrested

Kolkata: A devastating fire broke out at the hotel in Tarapith, Birbhum, around 5 am on Monday, resulting in the death of eight people and several injuries, according to police reports. The police have arrested the hotel owner, Kalyan Paul, and are conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire and the safety measures taken by the hotel authorities.

Twenty-two fire tenders were deployed to extinguish the fire, which took nearly three hours to be brought under control. The arrested owner claimed that there were no issues with the hotel, 'Bideshini,' and stated that there was an emergency exit at the back of the building. However, the injured have been admitted to the Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital.

An additional superintendent of police, Nilesh Srikant, said that the injured were struggling to find the back gate and reception due to darkness and smoke. A special team has been formed to investigate the safety measures of hotels as thousands of pilgrims are expected to gather at Tarapith soon due to the 'Kaushiki Amavasya' festival.
