Taiwo Awoniyi joins Coventry ahead of Premier League return

Coventry City has finalized the signing of Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest for an estimated £9 million. At 29 years old, Awoniyi brings Premier League experience to the Sky Blues as they gear up for their inaugural top-flight season following a Championship title triumph last year. Prior to his move to Forest, Awoniyi spent four years at the club, netting 23 goals in 103 appearances.

His standout performance came during the latter part of the 2022/23 season when he scored six crucial goals in Forest's final four league matches, securing their return to the Premier League. However, opportunities dwindled last term, with Awoniyi featuring in just three of his 17 Premier League games and scoring four goals. The powerful forward will offer Lampard additional attacking options and is poised to be the team's primary frontman for the upcoming campaign.

This marks Coventry's sixth signing of the summer, following Gus Hamer, Carl Rushworth, Loum Tchaouna, Aurèle Amenda, and Caleb Yirenkyi, as the club prepares for its historic return to the highest tier of English football.
