Supreme Court again rebuffs Trump’s push to toss out $5 million verdict in E. Jean Carroll case

The Supreme Court has once more rejected President Donald Trump's attempt to overturn a $5 million verdict in the E. Jean Carroll case, which found him guilty of sexually abusing the writer in a New York City department store in the 1990s and defaming her. Trump's legal team had sought the justices' reconsideration of their refusal to hear his appeal.

The court denied Trump's petition, along with several others, marking the unusual practice of granting such requests. Despite this setback, Trump and the Justice Department are now requesting the high court to dismiss another Carroll verdict worth $83 million, arguing that the former president is immune from legal action over his 2019 comments about her during his presidential term.

The court has yet to rule on this latest appeal. E. Jean Carroll, a seasoned advice columnist and former television talk show host, testified at a 2023 trial that Trump turned a cordial 1990s meeting into a physically abusive encounter in the dressing room at Bergdorf Goodman, a high-end retailer near Trump Tower in Manhattan. The jury ruled in her favor, finding Trump liable for defamation after he denied her allegation in 2022.

Trump has consistently denied any wrongdoing. The Associated Press reserves the right to identify only those who come forward publicly regarding sexual assault allegations, as Carroll has done.
