Supporters rally for justice for California dog amid animal cruelty investigation

MERCED, Calif. -- Animal advocates and community members rallied outside the Merced County District Attorney's Office on Friday, demanding justice for Sweetie. The incident stems from an ongoing investigation by the Merced Police Department into allegations of animal cruelty against an unhoused man and his pet.

Authorities received multiple reports of abuse and neglect dating back to last year. Protests aim to persuade prosecutors not to restore custody of Sweetie to her owner. Florence Lambert, representing the Merced Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, expressed their hope that the man will not gain custody of Sweetie or any other animals.

Sweetie's appearance in poor physical condition has shocked residents; one witness described her as very skinny, malnourished, and fearful. Merced resident Melanie Matthews witnessed Sweetie's condition directly and emphasized the dog's need for proper care and love. Sweetie is currently in protective custody, and police have gathered evidence for the District Attorney's review.

The Merced SPCA reported that Sweetie is eating and showing signs of improvement, though she remains fearful. Advocates are urging residents to attend the City Council meeting on Monday to raise awareness about the issue.
